The Phoenix Dactylifera Medjool is a true edible date palm. Originally imported to Southern California and South West Arizona from North Africa and the Middle East in the early 1900’s. The desert climate is conducive to the growing of dates. Date growing and harvesting is big business and there are many steps necessary to produce a quality date. There is year round activity at the date gardens. You can find medjool dates in the produce section of your local grocery store, they are delicious and very healthy to consume.
In recent years the Medjool palm has been used for landscaping purposes from Las Vegas to Florida. Although the dates will not mature to give us an edible date due to our high humidity, the palms have become a welcome addition to our landscape pallet.
There are many cultivars of the Phoenix Dactylifera due to the variety in tastes of the different dates that the different cultivars produce. The Medjool, Deglet Noor, and Zahidi are the most popular with the Medjool being at the top of the list of Dactyliferas being used in landscapes.
The Medjool is a majestic stately palm that works well as a stand alone palm or in a group planting. All true medjools are grown from offshoots which are cut off the parent palm and transplanted into the ground; this gives them that matching “cloned” look as opposed to being seed grown.
Treemart has fields of medjools in the Southwest with many sizes available. We also keep an inventory here in Florida at our Tampa facility.
